POSTECH “All on” at CES 2024

On January 9, 189 students from the class of 2021 of our university attended the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world’s largest electronics and IT product trade show, in Las Vegas, USA. This is the second dispatch following the participation of all students in the class of 2020, which was called the ‘COVID-19 class’ in 2023.
The 2023 trip was organized as a one-time opportunity for students who were unable to fully enjoy their campus experience due to the pandemic to attend CES and experience the current state and future direction of high-tech. However, from 2024, the program becomes a regular program for current students who have completed their third year, so that students can experience the wider world. However, for those more interested in the sciences, students will be able to choose between Nobel Week in Sweden in December, and CES.
Themed “All Together, All On,” this year’s CES marks the beginning of the era of artificial intelligence. As in previous years, students enjoyed the CES schedule in a variety of ways, including attending CES conferences and visiting various company booths. Five students, including Lim Oh-joong of the Department of Materials Science & Engineering, served as POSTECH-CES Student Reporters, which attracted attention by publishing articles introducing domestic and foreign startups through Maeil Business during the CES.
After the CES, So Hyun Kim, an undergraduate student from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, said, “It was like a dream to walk through the moment of innovation.”
This year, POSTECH also organized a joint exhibition booth with POSCO and Gyeongsangbuk-do. The 110-square-meter pavilion featured 25 SMEs incubated by POSTECH and POSCO Venture Platform and eight companies incubated by Gyeongsangbuk-do. Considering that 14 companies attended the event for the first time in 2022, it has more than doubled in size.
Particularly noteworthy is the number of companies that won innovation awards. The number of innovation awards doubled from 5 last year to 10 this year, with the Best of Innovation Award going to two companies, alumni company Flow Studio and Midbar, a company fostered by POSCO, and the Innovation Award going to eight companies, including faculty startups Nature Glutech and ANPOLY, and student startup Cream. What’s even more remarkable is that only 35 companies worldwide won this year’s CES Best of Innovation Award, and two of them were from our group, which has only participated in CES for three times.
Going forward, POSTECH will continue to develop programs to provide students with more diverse experiences on and off campus, such as CES and Nobel Week, and actively support faculty, alumni, and students to create greater value through startups and growth.
